History of Ballet Folklórico

Ballet Folklórico dance, like the English term “folk dance,” means dances of the people. This type of dance reflects the traditions, cultures, and beliefs of people in each state.  Folkloric dance expresses the life and spirit of a people through its movement and music.

In 1952, the dancer and choreographer Amalia Hérnandez decided to form her dance group, which she called Ballet Moderno de México. The music and dances reflect various regions of Mexico and the traditions of indigenous Mesoamerican culture. Amalia’s dance group was a pioneer of the Ballet Folklórico.

In Vallejo, the first Ballet Folklórico was founded by Mrs. Margaret Estrada in 1975
