The immigration wave of the 1960s to the city of Vallejo

Just under one million immigrants from Latin America were present in the country in 1960, but by the 1960s, that number had doubled. The number then doubled once more in the 1970s and nearly doubled once more in the 1980s. Then, in the 1990s, it more than doubled.

During the 1960s Vallejo saw an increase of Mexican from a variety of small towns from the state of Jalisco, Mexico. They were did non English speaking community that began to form their own support group with in Vallejo.

Many men arrived by themselves to see explore the possibilities of employment and housing prior to bringing with families. Others arrived with their families ready to work. While others arrive with the idea of just working for a little to earn enough help support their family in Mexico and eventually go back was their family was economically established: they had a better home, education, jobs or started their business in Mexico. Most of the time destiny had another journey for them. In the 1960s many share stories of experiencing discrimination and having a hard time finding housing. Also, find the foods they were accustom too was not easy. The jobs that many of the immigrant community found were in agriculture, construction & landscape labor, housekeepers, janitorial
