DÍA DEL NIÑO

April 30th (this year event is on APRIL 27, 2024

Children's Day is celebrated on April 30th as a day to recognize children's importance and promote their wellbeing. This tradition began in Mexico in 1925 and is now observed in many other Latin American countries.

In 2022 councilwoman Mina Loera-Diaz hosted Día Del Niño in partnership with The Eric Reyes foundation and Project Blessing bags. The celebration included the collaboration of the Police and Fire departments. Children enjoy a day full of activities, including art projects, games, and raffles.

The first DÍA DEL NIÑO celebration took place in 2009 in the parking lot of La Tapatia market and was hosted by Diaz & Loera Centro Latino.

CINCO DE MAYO

May 5th

A common misconception is that this marks Mexico's Independence Day. Still, the day's significance is a single battle, the First Battle of Puebla, where Mexican forces won against a French attack. Despite being outnumbered 3 to 1, General Ignacio Zaragoza held the town of Puebla while sustaining very few losses, showing the strength of Mexico to the world as the French army retreated. Cinco de Mayo is not a nationally celebrated holiday in Mexico. It is celebrated in Puebla and acknowledged across Mexico. In

the US, Cinco de Mayo is a chance to celebrate our heritage, but it was not until the 1980s that beverage companies began to run ad campaigns to celebrate the day.  While it is not meant to be a wild party, it is an opportunity to unite people.

You can learn more about the history of the day here: https://bit.ly/37ipR2P

In the City of Vallejo, Cinco de Mayo is hosted by the Solano Aids Coalition. Community advocate Mario Saucedo continues to bring the yearly event downtown with vendors and ballet Folklorico singers and dancers.

DÍA DE MUERTOS

November 2th, 2024 12pm-8pm

200 Georgia St, Vallejo, CA 94590

Solano Aids Coalition created the “Las Catrinas de Solano Aids Coalition” to honor and celebrate Dia de Muertos in Vallejo. The event takes place downtown and includes a parade of catrinas, music, and vendors throughout the day.

Dia de Muertos is celebrated in Mexico from November 1st to 2nd. During this time, families gather to remember and honor their deceased relatives. This tradition's earliest roots date back to the Aztecs. During this time, we see families build ofrendas with photos, candles, and items meaningful to their relatives. La Catrina is one of the recognizable symbols for this day. She was worshipped as the goddess of death by the Aztecs, as they believed she protected and helped their loved ones into their next stages.
